Indonesia is one of the pricier countries in this comparison, roughly double Thailand for the same gigabytes. Jetpac at $18 and Nomad at $19 are the cheapest 10GB plans that exist here and we cannot link either of them.
Indonesian networks the island problem
Telkomsel is the only network with genuinely national coverage: the Gili crossings, the road up to Munduk, Flores, Sumba, Raja Ampat. Everyone who lives outside a city carries it. Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison is solid in Java, Bali's south and the big cities. Smartfren is urban only and rarely resold to travel eSIMs.
Inside Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud town every plan works. The moment you go north or take a boat, Telkomsel is what is left.

Indonesia blocks foreign phones from local networks unless the device IMEI is registered with customs. This is the rule that catches people who plan to buy a local SIM on arrival.
The registration happens at the customs counter in arrivals: your passport, your boarding pass, the phone, and a fee if the device is valued above the duty-free threshold. It is free below it. Miss the counter and a local SIM simply will not connect, and sorting it afterwards means a trip to a customs office.
A travel eSIM is not affected. Indonesian customs treats inbound roamers on foreign SIMs as roaming traffic, not as devices joining the network locally, so there is nothing to register. That is the single best practical argument for an eSIM in this country, and almost no provider mentions it.

Do I need to register my IMEI for an eSIM in Indonesia?
No. IMEI registration applies to phones joining Indonesian networks with a local SIM or local eSIM. A travel eSIM roams in under a foreign contract, which customs treats as inbound roaming, so there is nothing to register at the airport.
Does a Bali eSIM work on Nusa Penida and the Gilis?
On Telkomsel, largely yes, including most of the boat crossings, with dead patches on the Penida cliffs and the interior roads. On Indosat alone, expect it to fade once you leave the harbour areas. Download offline maps for any island day trip.
How much data do I need for two weeks in Bali?
About 8 to 10GB for maps, messaging, uploads and the amount of Instagram Bali generates. Villa and cafe wifi covers the evenings but is unreliable enough that you should not plan around it. Remote workers should budget unlimited.
Is a Telkomsel tourist SIM cheaper than an eSIM?
Per gigabyte, yes, noticeably. It also requires the IMEI registration above and a passport at the point of sale. For stays under a month the eSIM is simpler; past that, the local SIM starts to pay for the hassle.
