How much data for Asia
Most people buy twice what they use, then buy again in a country where it costs three times as much. Here is the arithmetic before you pick a plan.

Assumes you sleep somewhere with wifi and use it. Asia is unusually well covered: hotels, hostels, cafes, convenience stores, metro stations and long-distance buses in most of these countries have working wifi. Take these numbers up by half if you are camping, island-hopping or in rural Indonesia, where you should not plan around wifi at all.

Camera translation is the Asia-specific line. In Japan, China, Thailand and Taiwan you will point your camera at menus, ticket machines and station signs far more than you expect, and it is not free.
Three travellers, three numbers find yourself here
Tokyo and Kyoto, or Singapore and KL. Maps between stations, messages, a few uploads, everything heavy on hotel wifi at night. Real usage lands near 2.5GB. A $5.49 to $8.13 local pack does it.
Island-hopping in the Philippines, or Bangkok to Chiang Mai to Krabi. Constant maps, ride-hailing, uploads from the road and unreliable accommodation wifi. 8 to 10GB, so buy 10 and stop worrying.
Bali or Chiang Mai with a laptop. Tethering alone is 2 to 3GB a day, so no fixed plan survives. $19.49 for 30 days of regional unlimited at 5GB a day, or a local unlimited plan if you are not crossing borders.
What makes Asia different four things
Wifi is everywhere and it is good. Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea have public wifi that actually works; Thailand and Malaysia are close behind. This is not Europe, where you pay for hotel wifi and it drops. It genuinely reduces how much mobile data you need.
Translation eats data. Camera translation of a menu is about 20MB, and in Japan or China you will do it ten times a day. Download the offline language pack before you fly and this line disappears.
Ride-hailing is constant. Grab, Gojek and Didi run in the background with live maps. It is not huge, roughly 30 to 60MB a day, but it is every day.
Indonesia and the Philippines break the pattern. Villa and island wifi is unreliable enough that your eSIM does the work your hotel does elsewhere. Add half again to any estimate for those two.

Data questions the ones people actually search
How much data do I need for two weeks in Asia?
About 4GB if your phone is for maps and messaging, 10GB with social feeds, photo uploads and some video, and unlimited if you tether a laptop. Wifi covers your evenings in most of Asia, which is why these numbers are lower than the same trip in Europe or the US.
Is 5GB enough for a week in Asia?
Comfortably, unless you are streaming on buses or working from your phone. A week of maps, messaging, ride-hailing and daily photo uploads runs 2 to 3GB. 5GB gives you room for the days when the hotel wifi is a lie.
Is 20GB enough for a month in Asia?
For one person on normal use, yes. A month of maps, messaging, social and moderate video lands near 20GB with wifi at night. If you tether a laptop or make daily video calls, no fixed plan will hold and you want an unlimited plan with a published cap.
Does using Google Maps use a lot of data?
No, roughly 5MB an hour while navigating, which is nothing. Downloading the offline map area over wifi before you go removes even that, and it keeps working in the tunnels, gorges and ferry crossings where your signal will not.
How much data does WhatsApp use for calls?
A voice call is roughly 50MB an hour and a video call about 700MB. Text and photos are negligible. If you call home every evening on video, that alone is 15 to 20GB across a month and it changes which plan you should buy.
What uses the most data on a trip to Asia?
Video, in every form: streaming, video calls and Reels or TikTok. After that, photo and video uploads to cloud backup, which you can switch to wifi-only in your phone settings in about ten seconds and should.
